A dripping tap isn’t just annoying—it can waste over 5,000 litres of water per year, adding unnecessary costs to your utility bill. Whether you're dealing with an old mixer tap or a traditional compression faucet, this quick guide will help you fix it safely and effectively.
🔧 Step 1: Turn Off the Water Supply
Before doing anything, switch off the water to your tap. You’ll usually find isolation valves beneath the sink. Turn them clockwise to shut off the water.
Tip: Open the tap afterwards to drain any remaining water and relieve pressure.
🧰 Step 2: Disassemble the Tap
Remove the handle using a screwdriver. Some taps may have decorative caps hiding the screw—just pop them off carefully with a flathead screwdriver.
Be sure to keep all parts safely aside—you’ll need them to reassemble the tap later.
🔄 Step 3: Check and Replace the Washer or Cartridge
Most leaks are caused by a worn washer or faulty ceramic cartridge.
For older compression taps, replace the rubber washer.
For modern mixer taps, replace the cartridge (available from most plumbing suppliers).
Take the old part to your local plumbing merchant to get an exact match—or ask us at Irving PHG and we’ll source the right part for you.
🧽 Step 4: Clean the Components
Before reassembling, clean inside the tap housing. Limescale and debris can cause seals to wear out faster. Use white vinegar or a descaler and a soft cloth to clean gently.
🔄 Step 5: Reassemble and Test
Put all parts back together in reverse order. Replacing for new where required . Slowly turn the water supply back on and test the tap. If it's still leaking or leaking from a different spot, the issue might be deeper—such as a cracked valve seat or internal corrosion.
🛠️ When to Call a Professional
If your DIY fix doesn’t work—or you simply don’t want the hassle—it’s best to call a certified, experienced plumber. Persistent leaks may signal:
Pipe corrosion
High water pressure
Failing tap body
Limescale damage
Please when undertaking any manual works wear the correct P.P.E .The above are set out as guidelines only and should be treated as such. Irving Phg take no responsibility for any damage to property or persons undertaking the above.
